Nokia N8 Launched in Pakistan

Highly hyped, 12 megapixeled Nokia’s N8 has at last arrived in Pakistan, well sort of. Device was launched in an event arranged by Nokia in Karachi today.
Customers who had pre-ordered the phone with Ufone service centers, are said to receive their their phones soon.
However, the device would be available at retail stores after one month. Until then, you don’t have any choice but to get the device from Ufone. It’s because of some sort of exclusive agreement between Nokia and Ufone.
It maybe recalled that Ufone is accepting pre-orders at Rs. 41,900, which is 25 percent lower than the market price as claimed by Ufone.
Some (official) voices in today’s launch opined that N8 would be priced at PKR 36,000 to PKR 38,000, while few others said N8 to be priced at PKR 44,500.
Nokia didn’t confirm the exact price to anyone.

Telenor Pakistan

Telenor Pakistan performed better than we expected following the flooding which has severely affected the country.
Highlights
Telenor Pakistan’s revenues for the reported quarter stood at USD 199 million down from USD 210 million in 2nd quarter 2010, while 11 percent higher than the same period in previous year.
Thanks to increased sales, Telenor said, company’s EBITDA margin for Pakistan stood at 29.7 percent, 5 percent percent higher than same period last year.
Telenor Pakistan managed to cut its expenditure by 37 percent as compared to same quarter in 2009, due to focus on network capacity investments.

“Telenor Pakistan continues to consolidate its business growth. The previous quarter saw Pakistan facing one of the worst floods in its history. Telenor Pakistan responded with concerted efforts, becoming the first and one of the largest corporate contributors to the relief drive.
A calamity of the size we witnessed is bound to have some negative impact on the business environment of the country. However, this was minimized with the help of our teams and their well coordinated efforts.”

Universal Laptop Charger [Preview]

clip image002 thumb1 Universal Laptop Charger [Preview]
Couple of days back my laptop charger went unresponsive and I had to visit market for new charger.
I was told by this one shopkeeper that he can sell me a laptop charger for Rs. 700, which was made in China and it came with no warranty at all.
But with that I was offered another solution for my laptop that was “Universal Laptop Charger” with multiple pins for only PKR 750/- obviously china made ;) This gadget has an ability to charge almost all laptops, and it works like a charm with my laptop.
A universal laptop charger can be used with different types of laptops without buying specific laptop charger for a specific laptop. Universal laptop charger is usually available with 8 different pin connectors and in the range of 15v to 19.5 volts adjusted automatically (however, some universal chargers may not support automatic adjustment of output power).
Universal laptop chargers are designed for the people who have multiple laptops at a single place like a laptop repairing shop, Networking admin etc, but it can also benefit general users based on requirments.
How to Buy a Universal Laptop charger:
Things you must consider before buying a laptop charger are:
  • It must have 8 different pins to connect with different variety of la
    • ptops.
clip image004 thumb Universal Laptop Charger [Preview]
    • Very IMPORTANT Step: You must check the required voltage for your laptop. This can be verified through your laptop manual or otherwise it would be mentioned on your original charger as well. So make sure that you are inputting correct and exact amount of voltage to your laptop. A mistake here can damage your laptop severally. Try consulting an expert to know the required voltage for your laptop.
    • Some of universal laptop chargers are available with retractable cords; which can be disturbing in some cases as retractable cords disconnects a lot.
    Where to buy in Pakistan?
Well there is no specific place except electronics markets or computer markets.

Microsoft Contributes $ 1.3 Mln for the Flood Victims

DSCF0038 thumb Microsoft Contributes $ 1.3 Mln for the Flood VictimsMicrosoft Pakistan is working closely with different NGOs and Government bodies in Pakistan as part of the rescue and prevention effort now underway.
In this regard Microsoft announced a relief package consisting of $ 700,000 cash-donation, deployment of disaster management software for the Govt. of Punjab at no cost, urgent food supplies to the flood victims in KPK province and software donations to various NGOs currently involved in relief activities.
In the first and the most urgent phase of this humanitarian assistance, Microsoft Pakistan team volunteered in donating and distributing food items comprising flour, rice, cooking oil, sugar and tea to the hundreds of families left destitute by the heavy monsoon rains, which have ravaged different parts of Pakistan.
A group of individuals from Microsoft team has visited Nowshera and its surroundings four times in last one month to deliver urgently needed food supplies to flood victims there. So far over 300 families have been reached.
“It has been extremely difficult to reach these vulnerable families,” said Shoaib Khalil, Marketing Lead, Microsoft Pakistan.
“Almost all infrastructures have been destroyed by the flood and relief activities are hindered. Sitting back in the office it was impossible for us to gauge the level of assistance needed by the affected families. I would urge people in their personal capacity shall come forward and visit these camps with do their share of support “he added.
As part of the efforts to create resilient communities, Microsoft will support landing a Disaster Management Response system in the Punjab Province. Country Manager Kamal Ahmed led the Microsoft mission in a presentation to the Punjab Chief Minister and subsequently his cabinet, to present a state of the art Emergency Response System developed by Microsoft Gold Partner, Geodan . The Dutch Firm, which received Microsoft’s 2008 innovation award, will provide the $500,000 software package and initial training free of charge as part of Microsoft partner support to flood relief.
The Response System and its technical staff, which has especially flown in from Holland has already began the installation and training for Punjab Province Staff. Microsoft will also arrange demos for the software system to all the major donors so that it can become part and parcel of the arsenal of disaster response mechanisms. In addition Microsoft will also be providing software donations to NGOs involved in the relief effort.
Talking at this ceremony Kamal Ahmed, Country General Manager Microsoft Pakistan said
“The floods have uprooted millions from their homes. This is a time when every individual, every brand, every company must do everything possible to help the affectees in areas best suited to their core strengths. Only this way, will we be able to maximize our impact and tend to the needs of our fellow Pakistanis. A single entity’s contribution is limited by its individual resources and skill. Our aim is to help as many people as possible and therefore, it is important to create synergies to maximize reach. What we could have done alone would be far smaller than what we can do together with our cause partners like; Geodan and Govt. Of Punjab combined. We have come together to provide help in their respective areas of expertise and have dedicated their individual resources to reach out to those unfortunately affected by the country’s floods. “
Microsoft and its employees around the world have committed and contributed generously for flood relief efforts in Pakistan. Microsoft offices in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and our Middle East and Africa Region are matching employees’ donations as well. Besides the cash donation MSN & Bing had been running cross network promotion on how to donate to help for Pakistan flood victims, through their websites. Besides the cash donation MSN & Bing has been running cross network promotion on how to donate to help Pakistan.
Manager Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy, Malik Babur Javed ,while appreciating the multi-fold support provided by Microsoft said,
“The unprecedented torrential rains and flash floods have caused immense human and financial loss to the country and it is the need of the hour that the business community should come forward with generous donations so that maximum relief could be provided to the million of displaced families.”
The United Nations has reported that to date, an estimated 20 million people have been affected by torrential rains and flooding and 7 to 8 million people are in dire need of food aid, clean water and shelter. Over 1,700 lives have been lost, more than 1,600 injured and 2 to 3 million people displaced due to the various rain-related hazards including landslides, floods, mudflows and structural collapse. More floods due to continued rains in upper parts of the country are likely to swell the number of those affected.

Huawei Likely to Soon Withdraw Petitons Against Warid

Warid and Huawei have resolved the deadlock on most of the monetary issues in a high level meeting held in Beijing on late Friday, claimed Telecom Recorder, citing sources close to the situation.
Following is the excerpt from story produced at Telecom Recorder!
The Chinese telecom infrastructure, Huawei, will withdraw its legal petition submitted in Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, recently against Warid as part of the negotiations finalized by the both parties on the agreed payment reschedule.
The major development was made as the top-brass of Abu Dhabi group met President Huawei in his headquarter, spokesmen of the Huawei and Warid confirmed Telecom Recorder.
The Hauwei officials in Pakistan will likely to withdraw case against Warid before its first hearing scheduled to he held on October 26.
The partners will also make it public on settlement of issues in media to compensate the damages occurred on the reputation of both companies subsequently legal battle was aggressively pursued by Huawei.
In this regard, press statement and public notices will be printed in the leading newspapers once the petition withdrawal process is completed. All issues between the two parties are expected to be resolved amicably in this week.
Pakistan Telecom Observer adds
Sources close to Huawei have disclosed that decision of going into court against mere 100 million dollar was taken solely by some individuals based in Pakistan and Middle East Legal Departments, while top management was not fully endorsed, Pakistan Telecom Observer, an independent group of telecom experts said.
It is also learned that rewarding the blue-eyed lawyer of Huawei could be a reason of filing of petition. Source said that the lawyer was paid as high as PKR 20 Million in cash for the case.
Moreover, our sources in Warid informed that Huawei transmits just 7 Percent of Warid’s total traffic. Hence Huawei’s appeal for liquidating the company, worth multi billion dollar, for paying just 100 million is considered as over re-action to damage the reputation of Warid.
Legal Battle
Earlier, Huawei Technologies Pakistan Pvt Limited on 23 August 2010 instituted three petitions in the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, for the winding up of Warid Telecom (Pvt.) Ltd, one of the five cellular operators in Pakistan.
The petitions have been filed only after repeated assurances by Warid that the outstanding and admitted liabilities would be repaid.
As interim measures the Huawei companies sought stay orders against Warid from disposing off its assets and the transfer of shares. The court was pleased to grant such orders. It has also directed Warid to submit its monthly statement of income and expenses. Huawei is seeking the appointment of a provisional manager while the petitions are pending.
It has been pleaded that Warid, admittedly, owes the three Huawei companies a sum far exceeding US $ 100,000,000 (US Dollars One Hundred Million) equivalent to a sum exceeding Pak Rupees 10,000,000,000.00(Pak Rupees Ten Billion).
Back Fire
Recently filed petition against Warid Telecom of Pakistan has caused Huawei serious reputation damage as mobile networks  are going to get more conscious before contracting Chinese top network vendor.
Civil Society also showed the serious concerns over legal action from Huawei by saying it an unwanted, unnecessary and harsh step from Huawei and suggests both multi-national companies to resolve the issue outside the court.
“The company responsible for the situation must act immediately to control damage otherwise it may hurt its interests in many countries” Warned a local economy-focused think-tank.
Earlier, the Chairman of Dhabi Group and Warid Telecom also wrote a very positive and polite letter to the President of Huawei on the 12th of June this year which shows Warid’s intention of reaching a peaceful solution regarding this matter. But Huawei ignored the letter and filed a petition in the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench with the subject; “Winding up Warid Telecom Ltd”.
Warid to Back Again With New Products
In last couple of weeks, Warid’s advertisement volume was witnessed thin on television screen. The UAE-based cellular operator was quite behind to introduce their aggressive services campaign on media.
However, it is hoped that Warid with its brand “Glow” will once again bombard a new product campaign in next couple of days, which will also remove trust deficit of its more than 18 million concern customers.
